Akshaya Patra - A bucket full of food

Staring were the eyes

Of a hungry child

They needed something

More than anything

The need for food is greater than sleep

Empty stomach the body always weeps

The Apple I was to eat

No longer was sweet

There is no caring

Better than sharing

All to eat, all to live is the God’s creation

Leading this way is the Akshaya Patra Foundation.

There was a night when I had to sleep empty stomach, because my mother wasn’t home and I was too lazy to cook anything having had a late lunch. It’s funny the feeling and sounds that come out from your tummy when there is a lack of essentials and more of secretions. But it isn’t amusing for everyone. India is a hugely populated country and in a country of many there is always a dearth for the basic, the basic being food. For so many children eating a full meal twice a day is not an everyday matter of fact thing but happens only on special days. There are those of us who eat and waste and also those of us whose pets eat and waste, and then there are more of us who can benefit from the some of us who have what it makes to bring a smile to a hungry child.

There is no better way to help a child than granting education to a healthy stomach and a healthy brain, so that he does not worry about earning his food while studying.

Akshaya Patra is doing that one step in this field; in Sanskrit it means an inexhaustible vessel. Let’s make it big enough so that all children only stop eating when the stomach is full and the heart content.

For details of how the work is done to prepare food for 1,253,266 children, please visit the below site:

  2. I had the pleasure to volunteer for serving mid-day meals to some of those kids. It was a moment to relish all life, you can never imagine the kind of service this org does for under priveleged school-going children.
Fortunately or unfortunately thats the only full-square meal that most of these kids get.
There are some fantastic stats to compliment their efforts. The school drop-out rate has decreased to 18% and literacy rate in some areas have increased to 36%.
All in all this foundation is filling empty stomachs and directing them to get the right education which enables them to get in perfect life and a place in society.

  9. Nice post, Poorvi! Very creative in the way you have expressed your support for this cause.

For those of you reading this post, do you know that you can participate in several ways to help this great cause:

    - If you want to donate, as Poorvi suggested go to the web site and you will find instructions there.

    - You can get friends and family members to sponsor meals for a child or a few children on a specific day of the year. The cost of feeding one child per year in the Hyderabad area is about Rs. 550/ per year!!

    - If you are a part of a corporate, you can get your company to sponsor meals for one day on a specific day of the year for approx Rs. 1.5L for 38,0000 children in the Hyderabad area.

Thanks for your attention and support.
